On October 4, the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 overseeding schedule shows most private clubs in North Scottsdale and Carefree either closed or within days of closing. How much play a member gives up between now and Thanksgiving depends on how the club arranged its dates. Owning more than one course doesn't settle it. A club with seven courses can keep five open every day. A club with two can still have stretches when neither is open. And the longest closure in the area doesn't end until November 10.
Desert Mountain Built Its Calendar to Stay Open
Desert Mountain has the most room to work with, and the AGA schedule shows it using all of it. Four of its seven courses are overseeded this year, each on its own window.
| Course | Closes | Reopens | Overseeded in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| No. 7 | 9/14/2026 | 9/27/2026 | Yes |
| Cochise | 9/28/2026 | 10/11/2026 | Yes |
| Outlaw | 9/28/2026 | 10/18/2026 | Yes |
| Apache | 10/12/2026 | 10/25/2026 | Yes |
| Chiricahua | Not listed | Not listed | No |
| Geronimo | Not listed | Not listed | No |
| Renegade | Not listed | Not listed | No |
Based on these dates, no more than two of Desert Mountain's courses are closed on any one day this fall. Cochise and Outlaw share the window that began September 28. When Cochise reopens on October 11, Apache closes the next day and overlaps with Outlaw for about a week. After Outlaw returns on October 18, Apache is the only course closed until October 25.
The club's own explanation predates this season. A Desert Mountain FAQ from 2021 says the September and October rotation is staggered "so there will always be a selection of courses available" for members and guests. It also says the club rotates three of its courses each year through full overseed, partial overseed, and "dormant overseed," which covers only the tee boxes. According to the same document, a dormant year lets the Bermuda grow without competing against rye, which gives better playing conditions in summer. The FAQ also says Desert Mountain offers no reciprocal play, since it has so many courses on the property. For this community, that tradeoff depends on the rotation working, and the 2026 dates show it working.
A Second Course Helps Only If the Dates Line Up
At the two-course clubs, the dates matter far more than the number of courses.
Grayhawk has the cleanest handoff of the group. Talon closed on September 28 and is scheduled to reopen on October 12. Raptor closes that same day and reopens on October 30. On paper, one Grayhawk course is open every day of the season. The schedule doesn't promise members access to whichever course is open, though, so how play works across the two is a question for the club.
Whisper Rock's dates overlap. The Upper Course closed on September 27 and reopens on October 23. The Lower Course closes on October 11 and reopens on November 4. Between October 11 and October 23, both courses are closed. Whisper Rock is also the last of the regularly overseeded clubs in this group to finish, with the Lower Course back the first week of November.
Troon North has the same pattern on a smaller scale. The Monument Course closed on September 21 and reopens on October 9. The Pinnacle Course closes on October 5, tomorrow, and reopens on October 24. For about four days this week, neither course is open. Starting October 9, Monument carries play until Pinnacle returns. Just west of the Troon North clubhouse, the new Scottsdale Golf Retreat is taking reservations for stays beginning this month. It is a stay-and-play lodging with its own guest clubhouse, The Hangout, and is not an amenity of Troon North's courses. A December 2025 announcement had projected an early 2026 opening, so the October date is the current one.
Talking Stick doesn't stagger at all. The O'Odham and Piipaash courses share one window, September 27 through October 15.
Single-Course Clubs Close for Three to Five Weeks
A club with one course can't rotate, so the AGA windows for single-course clubs are simply the length of time members are off their home course. Counted from closing date to reopening date, they run from about three weeks to more than five.
| Club | Closes | Reopens | Approximate days closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Estancia | 9/21/2026 | 10/27/2026 | 36 |
| Mirabel | 9/17/2026 | 10/20/2026 | 33 |
| Silverleaf | 9/28/2026 | 10/30/2026 | 32 |
| Desert Highlands | 9/28/2026 | 10/30/2026 | 32 |
| Desert Forest | 10/5/2026 | 10/27/2026 | 22 |
| Troon Country Club | 10/12/2026 | 11/3/2026 | 22 |
Estancia started earliest among the clubs closing in late September and has the longest window in the group. Silverleaf and Desert Highlands run on identical dates. Desert Forest closes tomorrow. Troon Country Club starts last and finishes in November. Scottsdale National doesn't publish dates on the AGA schedule and lists all three of its courses as "Contact." We didn't find published reciprocal arrangements for Silverleaf, Estancia, Mirabel, Desert Highlands, or Whisper Rock, so members should ask their club directly.
Every date here is a scheduled window. Overseed timing depends on weather and germination, and the club is always the final word on when its course reopens.
Desert Highlands has been working on a longer-term alternative. A January 2024 AGA report described a multi-year Zoysia trial there aimed at eliminating overseeding altogether, which could save water and add golf days. The 2026 schedule still lists the club for a full overseed window.
Troon Country Club Reopens in Stages
Troon Country Club's closure runs longer than the overseed window suggests. The course is listed to reopen on November 3. Its $4.3 million practice and water-storage project, which began construction on May 1, is on a separate timeline. According to the club's June 16 announcement, the range is set to reopen in early November after overseeding, and the new putting and short-game facilities are due December 1.
The new short-game area is planned at 50,000 square feet, more than four times the size of the old one. The putting green grows to 12,500 square feet. The project also adds artificial-turf mats for frost and weather delays, TrackMan technology on the new practice tee, and an expanded pond. These are June targets, and we found no later update confirming them. Members can expect to play the course in November but should plan on December before the short-game area is ready.
DC Ranch Has Been Closed Since January
The Country Club at DC Ranch makes every overseed window above look short. The course closed on January 5, 2026, and the AGA lists its reopening for November 10, 2026, a week after Troon Country Club and Whisper Rock's Lower Course return. The club describes the closure as the final stage of a Golf Course Improvement Project costing more than $23 million. The project includes a fully renovated Tom Lehman championship course, an expanded practice facility, and redesigned golf operations.
The course coming back is also physically different. In a July 29, 2026 feature, the Arizona Alliance for Golf reported that the club removed 10 of its original 91 turf acres. It expects to save about 23 million gallons of water a year. The remaining fairways, rough, and tees were regrassed with a hybrid turf that uses less water. A new irrigation system controls each sprinkler head individually from an iPad, replacing a system about 30 years old. "We all want to be great stewards of water," said Dana Parish, director of agronomy. General manager and COO Jason Asbra described the project as about "more than just golf."
During the closure, DC Ranch offered members a "Golf Away Plan" through Troon. Members could join Troon Access for $149 a year instead of $249, or Access+ for $239.40 instead of $399. Access gives 15 percent off standard tee times at more than 150 participating Troon courses. Access+ adds discounts of up to 50 percent on tee times booked within 78 hours. Arizona courses named in the offer include Troon North, The Westin Kierland, The Phoenician, Boulders, and Ak-Chin Southern Dunes. This was a discounted paid program, not reciprocal play. Even so, it was the most specific published plan we found for members of a closed club.
From now until November 10, members across this group are off their home course for very different amounts of time. At Desert Mountain, it's no more than two courses at once. At the single-course clubs, it's three to five weeks. At DC Ranch, the course will have been closed for more than ten months by the time it reopens.
